How to Use Oud Body Oil for Layering (UAE Guide)

Oud is the most enduring fragrance tradition in this part of the world, and a good oud body oil does two jobs at once: it hydrates skin that the climate keeps drying out, and it lays down a warm, long-lasting scent. But oud rewards technique. Layered correctly, it lasts the whole day. Splashed on carelessly, it fades by lunch.

I'm Jena, the founder. Oud — al-oud — is Middle Eastern heritage, and I built our Arabian Oud Body Oil to treat it the way it deserves: as both skincare and scent. Here's how to layer it so it does both well.

The short answer

Moisturise first, then apply the oud oil on top — onto clean, slightly damp, warm skin, concentrated at the pulse points. The moisturised base holds the fragrance; the oud oil, as the final layer, projects it and seals everything in. Build it from the bottom up — a cream or lotion first, the scented oil last — and concentrate the oil where your skin is warm, because warmth is what lifts the scent through the day.

Why this order makes oud last longer

Fragrance fades faster on dry skin. Oils have nothing to cling to, so they evaporate quickly. Oud, being a deep base note, lasts longest when it sits on well-moisturised skin and is the top layer doing the projecting. This is the whole logic of fragrance layering: a hydrated base slows evaporation, and the scented oil on top releases gradually.

A body oil is the ideal final layer for this because it is a moisturiser too. Our Arabian Oud Body Oil 100mlArabian Oud Body Oil is argan-based — so as it carries the oud, it's also softening and hydrating skin that UAE air conditioning and hard water keep drying out. You get scent and skincare in one step, which is exactly how oud was traditionally used here.

Where and how to apply it

Start with a moisturised, warm base. Straight after a shower is ideal — apply an unscented (or complementary) cream or lotion to clean, slightly damp skin first.

Layer the oud oil on top, at pulse points and warm areas. Warm a few drops between your palms and press onto wrists, inner elbows, behind the neck, and décolletage. Warmth lifts the scent off the skin gradually through the day.

Pair it with an unscented base, like La Ligne Body Cream 200gLa Ligne Body Cream, so nothing competes with the oud. The hydrated layer underneath is what makes the scent last into the evening.

Layer with intention, not excess. Oud is rich. A little, layered properly, outlasts a lot applied carelessly. Shwaya shwaya — little by little.

Pairing oud without clashing

Oud is a strong base note, so be deliberate about what you pair it with. It sits beautifully with warm, complementary notes and can overwhelm lighter florals. If you wear a perfume too, choose one that shares warm or woody notes rather than something sharp and fresh. Many people in the region simply let the oud body oil be the scent — clean, layered, and long-lasting on its own.

For the general method behind all of this — cream first, oil on top to seal — we wrote a full guide on layering body oil with body cream that applies here too. The only difference with oud is that you're also building a fragrance, so placement on warm pulse points and a clean, unscented base matter even more.

Frequently asked questions

How do you layer oud body oil for the best scent? Moisturise first with an unscented cream or lotion on clean, slightly damp skin, then apply the oud oil on top at the pulse points. The hydrated base holds the fragrance and the oud oil projects it, making it last much longer.

Where should I apply oud body oil? Pulse points and warm areas — wrists, inner elbows, behind the neck, and décolletage — plus any dry areas that need hydration. Warmth lifts the scent gradually through the day.

Should oud body oil go on wet or dry skin? Slightly damp, warm skin is best, such as right after a shower. Damp, moisturised skin helps the oil absorb and the scent develop, and holds fragrance longer than dry skin.

Do I put the oil or the cream on first? Cream or lotion first, oud oil on top. The moisturised base holds the scent and the oil, being the final occlusive layer, both projects the fragrance and seals in moisture.

How do I make oud scent last all day? Apply it over a moisturised base and concentrate it on warm pulse points. Fragrance fades fast on dry skin, so the hydrated layer underneath is what gives oud its staying power.

Can I wear perfume over oud body oil? Yes, but choose a perfume with warm or woody notes that complement oud rather than a sharp, fresh scent that clashes. Many people let the oud body oil be the scent on its own.

Is oud body oil also moisturising or just for scent? Both. Arabian Oud Body Oil is argan-based, so it hydrates and softens skin while carrying the fragrance — useful in the UAE where AC and hard water constantly dry the skin.

How much oud body oil should I use? A small amount, layered properly, lasts longer than a generous splash. Concentrate it on pulse points over a moisturised base; you don't need much.

Can men use oud body oil too? Yes. Oud is traditionally worn across genders in the region. The method is the same — moisturised, warm skin, oud oil on top at the pulse points.
